The south stairway of Mandalay Hill is home to an extensive collection of early Nipattaw paintings. Historical records indicate that Saya Aye and Saya Ni (also known as Nandimitta Saya Ni), son of Saya Kha, were the artists responsible for these Nipattaw paintings.
The hermit U Khandi frequently adorned the resthouses he constructed with paintings depicting the Ten Great Jataka Tales, the Buddha's life story, and Buddhist and royal histories. These artworks served both aesthetic and moral purposes. To ensure the Nipat art properly incorporated royal customs, U Khandi even arranged for Saya Aye to be trained by Wetmasut Wundauk Min. However, the paintings have significantly faded, making it impossible to determine their original creation dates or verify the artists.
The southern corridor of Mandalay Hill holds a large collection of these early Nipattaw paintings. The lack of proper preservation within the pagoda corridor, exacerbated by humidity, heat, and dirt, threatens the survival of these valuable artworks, putting them at risk of being permanently lost.
