Burmese painting styles have developed over time, transitioning from palm leaf paintings to murals and, to folded paper scrolls. During the late Konbaung era, the Nipattaw painters emerged, creating a distinct style known as Nipattaw paintings. The most prominent patron of these artists was the hermit U Khandi. Nipattaw paintings are typically oil on zinc sheets.
The U Khandi Museum houses oil paintings, approximately 5 by 3 feet, that are of significant historical and religious importance to Mandalay Buddhists. These artworks chronicle the journey of Buddha's relics, from their excavation in Peshawar, India, to their arrival in Mandalay in 1909. Inscriptions on the paintings serve as historical records, detailing Prince Pyinmana's retrieval of the relics, the public's homage when they were at Queen Kyeay Myinâs palace, and the ongoing veneration by the Young Monks' Association of Mandalay after U Khandi's passing.
These striking and vibrant Nipattaw paintings, rendered in oil on zinc sheets, hold significant value for students of Burmese art history. Their creator, an unknown pioneer of the Nipattaw painting movement, depicted the journey of the relics from Peshawar, connecting the artwork to the history of the U Khandi Museum.
The U Khandi Museum sustained damage from a recent earthquake. Additionally, the paintings within the museum are experiencing fading and deterioration due to high heat and humidity. Expert restoration is required. The museum also features a collection of other compelling artifacts, paintings, and photographs, notably including portraits by U Saw Maung.
