Living Places, Living Knowledge — Mandalay

In the middle and upper regions of Myanmar, Mandalay and its surrounding areas like Sagaing hold a rich culture closely tied to the last royal cities. Yet, much of its present-day creative heritage remains undocumented, despite being widely known. Through the Living Places, Living Knowledge Story Map, local archaeologists, artists, and cultural practitioners were trained in Creative Assets Mapping. They contributed their knowledge and explored communities in Mandalay, Innwa, Amarapura, and Sagaing, working under limited access following the serious earthquake of March 2025 to record what is at risk.

Within a short period, 40 tangible assets were documented, including architecture, traditional crafts, artworks and paintings.Traditional artworks and handicrafts face further risks from a decline in skilled artisans, shortages of raw materials, and low market demand. Similarly, architecture, paintings, and other tangible assets continue to suffer from repeated natural disasters and political conflict, highlighting the urgent need for expert knowledge, technology, and sustainable funding.

The earthquake left widespread damage, making documentation challenging. In many cases, only photographs of ruins and deteriorating structures could be taken. The complete loss of Eaindawya Hti making, for example, meant that records relied heavily on community memory. Additionally, access to Sagaing was restricted due to instability, leaving data on local crafts incomplete with missing details on production and craftsmanship.

The detailed information of each asset and interesting connections between some assets can also be explored through the Story Map.

This map is a living story told by locals, highlighting creative assets that matter to their communities. The details are based on firsthand knowledge, with some secondary sources, as proper documentation remains limited. Consider this a starting point for exploring the rich creative heritage of Mandalay city and its surroundings.
