  The Ananda Pagoda was a stupa built by the queen of King Bodawpaya (Badon Min), the founder of the First Amarapura Dynasty. It was later renovated by the Princess of Phyu, sister of King Bagan Min, the fourth king to reign in Amarapura.The stupa was built on the site of an ancient ordination hall. It features Jataka tale paintings and coin collecting boxes.

  Beginning around 1917 (1279 in Burmese Calendar), the temple was collectively repaired by the public under the leadership of the hermit U Khandi of Mandalay Hill. After the independence from the British, the monks of the Phayargyi Monastery took over the pagoda's preservation from the hermit U Khandi and have continued to maintain it to this day.

  Before 1988, Patthana chanting ceremony was held every year on the full moon day of Tazaungmon. After 1988, the festival became less prominent, the actual chanting ceremony was replaced with televised programs. It was not until after 2007 that the Patthana chanting ceremony was reinstated. The Patthana ceremony was suspended for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was held again in 2024, it could not be held in 2025 due to earthquake damage.

  ၁၉၈၈ ခုနှစ် မတိုင်ခင်က တန်​တောင်မုန်းလပြည့်​နေ့​ရောက်တိုင်း ပဌာန်းပွဲ​တော် ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ကြသည်။ ၁၉၈၈​ ခုနှစ် နောက်ပိုင်း ပွဲ​တော်ရက်များတွင် ပဌာန်းပွဲ​တော်များကို ကျင်းပနိုင်ခြင်းမရှိတော့ဘဲ တီဗွီဖြင့် ပဌာန်းရွတ်သည်ကိုပြသ​သော ယဥ်​ကျေးမှုသာ ထွန်းကားခဲ့သည်။၂၀၀၇ ခုနှစ် ​​နောက်ပိုင်းမှသာလျှင် ပဌာန်းပွဲအား ပြန်လည်ကျင်းပနိုင်ခဲ့ကြသည်။ ကိုဗစ်​ကပ်​ရောဂါကြောင့် ပဌာန်းပွဲမှာ သုံးနှစ်နားခဲ့ရသည်။ ၂၀၂၄ ခုနှစ်တွင် ပြန်လည်ကျင်းပနိုင်ခဲ့​သော်လည်း ၂၀၂၅ ခုနှစ်တွင် ငလျင်ဒဏ်​ကြောင့် ကျင်းပပြုလုပ်နိုင်ခြင်း မရှိ​တော့​ပေ။
