Asset Description

The Church of Christ the King, also known as “Church of Jesus Christ – the Universal King,” the "Hundred-Year Church," or the "Italian Church." It was founded in 1927 by Rev. Fr. Domenico Pedrotti, a missionary from Italy's Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). It was completed in 1931 under the administration of Rev. Fr. Gerolomo Lissoni. The building was constructed with conventional cement stones shaped like sandstone blocks, meticulously crafted by Bro. Carletto Gusmaroli, Bro. Felice Tantardini, and Bro. Alessandro Crotta. This historic church notably served as a shelter during the Japanese Occupation in World War II, surviving an aerial bombing. Having stood for nearly a century, it continues to be a significant landmark today.
The Church of Christ the King is unique for its blend of architectural design, artistry, and religious significance. The rear section of the church resembles a castle with battlements on top. Inside, the church features paintings and statues created by a master artist from Milan, Italy, and stained-glass windows that fill the space with colorful light. The building's design has excellent natural acoustics, allowing sound to project clearly without the need for a microphone.
Today, the Catholic community in Kalaw continues to use and maintain the church. A major renovation of the interior and exterior was completed in 2008 under the supervision of Rev. Fr. Paul Aung Paw. Following an earthquake on March 28, 2025, further repairs were led by Rev. Fr. Simon Simo.
The church continues to face challenges such as cracks caused by rainwater, earthquake damage, and broken glass windows from children throwing stones. Despite not being officially registered as a heritage building, it has been preserved to this day through the dedication, donations, and labor of the local community.

ခရစ်တော်ဘုရင် ဘုရားကျောင်းကို “Church of Jesus Christ – the Universal King” ဟူ၍ အမည်ရပြီး “နှစ်တစ်ရာဘုရားကျောင်း” သို့မဟုတ် “အီတလီဘုရားကျောင်း” ဟူ၍လည်း လူသိများသည်။ ဤဘုရားကျောင်းသည် ၁၉၂၇ ခုနှစ်တွင် အီတလီနိုင်ငံမှ PIME သာသနာပြုဘုန်းတော်ကြီး Rev. Fr. Domenico Pedrotti မှ စတင်တည်ထောင်ခဲ့သည်။ ၁၉၃၁ ခုနှစ်တွင် Rev. Fr. ခရစ်တော်ဘုရင် ဘုရားကျောင်း၏ ထူးခြားသည့်အချက်မှာ အဆောက်အဦဒီဇိုင်း၊ အနုပညာဆန်မှုနှင့် သာသနာရေးအရေးပါမှုတို့ ပေါင်းစပ်ထားခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။ ကျောင်း၏နောက်ဖက်အဆောက်အဦအပိုင်းသည် ဗိသုကာပုံစံအရ ရဲတိုက်ပုံသဏ္ဌာန်နှင့် ထိပ်ဖက်တွင် ခေါင်းတံခါးတိုင်များ တပ်ဆင်ထားသည့် အဆောက်အဦကဲ့သို့ ဖန်တီးထားသည်။ အတွင်းပိုင်း၌ အီတလီနိုင်ငံ မီလန်မြို့မှ အနုပညာရှင်ကြီးတစ်ဦးက ဖန်တီးထားသည့် ပန်းချီနှင့် ရုပ်တုများပါဝင်ပြီး အရောင်စုံ အလင်းရောင်များကို ဖောက်ထွက်စေသည့် မှန်ပြတင်းပေါက်များလည်း ပါဝင်သည်။ အဆောက်အဦသည် သဘာဝအသံလှိုင်း ကျယ်ပြန့်စေသည့် ဒီဇိုင်းဖြစ်ပြီး မိုက်ခရိုဖုန်းမရှိသည့် အခြေအနေမျိုးတွင်ပင် မူရင်းအသံများကို လူအများနားထောင်နိုင်သည့် အဆင်ပြေမှု ပံ့ပိုးပေးသည်။
ယနေ့တွင်လည်း ကလောမြို့ရှိ ကက်သလစ်အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းက ဤဘုရားကျောင်းကို ဆက်လက်အသုံးပြုပြီး ထိန်းသိမ်းထားသည်။ ၂၀၀၈ ခုနှစ်တွင် Rev. Fr. Paul Aung Paw ၏ ကြီးကြပ်မှုဖြင့် အတွင်းပိုင်းနှင့် အပြင်ပိုင်းကြီးမားသည့် ပြန်လည်ပြုပြင်ထိန်းသိမ်းမှု ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။ ၂၀၂၅ ခုနှစ် မတ်လ ၂၈ ရက်နေ့တွင် ဖြစ်ပွားသည့် ငလျင်ကြောင့် ထိခိုက်သည့်အခါ Rev. Fr. Simon Simo ၏ ဦးဆောင်မှုဖြင့် ထပ်မံပြုပြင်ခဲ့သည်။
သို့သော် မိုးရွာခြင်းကြောင့် အလွှာပေါက်ခြင်း၊ ငလျင်ကြောင့် ထိခိုက်ခြင်းနှင့် အချို့သော မှန်ပြတင်းပေါက်များကို ကလေးများ၏ ကျောက်ခဲများပစ်ခြင်းကြောင့် ကွဲခြင်း စသည့်အန္တရာယ်များလည်း ရှိသည်။ တရားဝင် အမွေအနှစ်အဆောက်အဦအဖြစ် မှတ်ပုံတင်ခြင်း မရှိသေးသော်လည်း ဒေသခံအသိုင်းအဝိုင်း၏ အလှူငွေ၊ အချိန်အင်အားများ ပံ့ပိုးမှုကြောင့် ယနေ့ထိ ထိန်းသိမ်းထားနိုင်ခဲ့သည်။
