  The tradition of lotus weaving in the Inle region began approximately a century ago. Local history attributes the origin of this craft to Daw Sa Oo, a woman from Kyain Kham village. She initiated the practice by extracting threads from lotus stems to weave robes, which she then donated to the revered monk U Daung Taung Sayadaw and the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda. This cherished traditional craft of the Inle region has been passed down through generations. Today, lotus fabric and the Inle region are inextricably linked and highly esteemed. It is believed that this weaving tradition will endure as long as Inle Lake exists.

  In this industry, men are responsible for harvesting the lotus stems, while women handle the process from thread extraction to weaving the final cloth. In ancient times, it was customary for weavers to observe the five Buddhist precepts before starting their work. Weaving one scarf requires about 4,000 lotus stems and takes approximately three months. The intricate, multi-step process from fiber to finished cloth makes this a truly unique handicraft. Lotus robes are often woven as a meritorious act for monks, and the fabric is also given as a respectful gift to elders and as a token of praise for younger people. Lotus fabric is well-known for its unique properties: it retains warmth in cold weather and provides a cooling effect in hot weather.

  The craft is primarily passed down among women, but an increasing number of young people are now showing interest in it.

  The process of Inle Lotus Textile Weaving includes:

  • Harvesting the Lotus Stems: The process begins by collecting the lotus stems.

  • Extracting the Fibers: The outer layer of the stem is peeled away to reveal and extract the fine, delicate fibers inside.

  • Rolling the Fibers: The extracted fibers are carefully rolled together to form a uniform thread.

  • Spinning the Thread: The thread is then spun by hand or using a hand-powered spinning wheel.

  • Natural Dyeing (Optional): Threads can be dyed using natural colors.

  • Weaving the Cloth: The spun threads are woven on a traditional loom to create various items like robes, scarves, and clothing.

  ကြာလုပ်ငန်းတွင် အမျိုးသားတွေက ကြာရိုးရိတ်သိမ်းပြီး အမျိုးသမီးများမှ ချည်ထုတ်သည်မှ အထည်အဆင့်ထိ လုပ်ဆောင်ကြသည်။ ရှေးအခါက ကြာထည်ရက်လုပ်သူသည် ငါးပါးသီလစောင့်ထိန်းပြီးမှ ရက်လုပ်လေ့ရှိကြသည်။ ကြာပုဝါတစ်ထည်ရက်လုပ်ရန် ကြာရိုး (၄၀၀၀)ခန့် အသုံးပြုရပြီး၊ ၃ လခန့် အချိန်ယူရသည်။ အဆင့်ဆင့် ပြုလုပ်ရသည့် ချည်မျှင်မှအထည်ရသည့်အထိ ရက်လုပ်နည်းများကြောင့် လက်မှုလုပ်ငန်း တစ်ခုအနေဖြင့် ထူးခြားမှုရှိသည်။ကြာသင်္ကန်းများ ရက်လုပ်ကာ ဘုန်းတော်ကြီးများအား ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း၊ သက်ကြီးသူ လေးစားထိုက်သူတို့အား ရိုသေသမှုလက်ဆောင်ပေးခြင်း၊ ငယ်ရွယ်သူတို့အား ချီးမွမ်း လက်ဆောင်ပေးခြင်း စသည့်ဓလေ့တွေ ရှိကြောင်းသိရှိခဲ့ရသည်။ ကြာချည်၏ အစွမ်းသတ္တိမှာ အေးသောရာသီဥတုတွင် အနွေးဓာတ်ကိုထိန်းသိမ်းပေးကာ၊ ပူသောရာသီဥတုတွင် အအေးဓာတ်ပေးသည်ကို လူသိများကြသည်
