  Located in Kawt Hnat village, Mawlamyine, the U Na Ouk Monastery is a historic Buddhist monastery that blends traditional Burmese and colonial-era architecture. According to historical records, its construction was completed in 1902.

  U Na Ouk commissioned painters, sculptors, and architects from Mandalay to build the ordination hall, prayer hall, and other monastic structures with tiered roofs. Adorned with first-class kanote floral designs and glass mosaics, the interior walls also feature intricate relief carvings depicting scenes from the Jataka tales and the life of the Buddha in chronological order. The carvings in the main prayer hall, crafted by Burmese artisans, also incorporate elements of the local Mon culture. This thoughtful inclusion of local life in the artistry is admirable.

  Over time, some of the carvings have faded due to exposure to rain and sunlight. Currently, the monastery is maintained by local villagers and Buddhist monks. Despite their small size, the carvings in the prayer hall showcase the meticulous attention to detail, endearing charm, and masterful artistry of the craftsmen.
