The two large lion statues on Mandalay Hill are located on the left and right sides of the main southern entrance staircase. These two statues were a donation from U Ae Yar and Daw Kyi Kyi, owners of a brokers' sales centre in Mandalay, around 1923.
The lions are a significant landmark at the start of the journey up Mandalay Hill, emphasizing the hill's religious importance and sanctity. They are a respected symbol and an iconic representation of the city, often seen together with Mandalay Hill. The statues allow for the study of traditional Burmese architecture, masonry, and plasterwork.
The two lions on Mandalay Hill, though undamaged by the 2025 earthquake, undergo continuous maintenance by the board of trustees, including repainting and plastering. To guarantee their ongoing preservation from future natural disasters, expert support, conservation techniques, and funding are essential.
