The style of the roof ridges on the religious buildings within the Shwesaryan Pagoda compound in Thaton, Mon State, represents a traditional Burmese architectural design called "maw-yun-choe," which is no longer used in modern construction. This five-tiered roof ridge is a significant example of Burmese architecture, making it an important subject for students of the field.
"Yun-khaung" and "yun-choe" are terms used in Burmese architecture. The part of the roof that is added on top of the main ridge is called the yun-khaung or "lae-paw." The different levels and heights of this roof are referred to as maw-yun-choe or yun-choe. There are various styles of roof bends, such as "kho-nan-choe" and "maw-line-choe," and the "yun-set-khaung-yoe" is the name for the roof style that follows the maw-yun-choe pattern. These roofs can have three, five, or more tiers.
