  Kyarm, the Mon Crocodile Zither Instrument is a stringed instrument played during important Mon traditional ceremonies. It is uniquely crafted in the shape of a crocodile, an animal that lives both on land and in water.

  The distinct sound of the Mon Crocodile Zither is essential for Mon cultural pageants and dances, as it captures the unique Mon musical tones. The instrument is a mandatory component of "Samai Gwet”, a traditional rural duet dance, where it is played alongside the drum, flute, Htaung-tayaw (upright violin), and bunch & bamboo (Si & Wa).

  The body of the Mon Crocodile Zither is made from Yemane, Padauk, or Taung Pin-ne wood. Thirteen wooden pieces are attached at the back of the crocodile, along with three strings—either silk or nylon, to produce different musical tones. The instrument is then played by plucking it with a pointed pick.

  The Mon Crocodile Zither instrument is at risk of disappearing due to a lack of formal training schools, systematic curriculums, and long-term support. The number of people who pass on the tradition, learn to play, and perform is dwindling. This threatens to cause both the tangible heritage of the instrument itself and the intangible heritage of the music to fade away. It is essential that today's youth contribute to the preservation and revival of this cultural legacy.

  မွန်မိကျောင်းတူရိယာသည် မွန်လူမျိုးတို့၏ ရိုးရာအထိမ်းအမှတ် အခမ်းအနားကြီး တို့တွင် တီးခတ်အသုံးပြုရသော ကြိုးတပ်တူရိယာတစ်ခု ဖြစ်သည်။ ကုန်းနေ၊ ရေနေသတ္တဝါ မိကျောင်းပုံကို အခြေခံပြီး ဖန်တီးထားသည်မှာ ထူးခြားလှသည်။

  မွန်မိကျောင်းတူရိယာသံသည် တစ်မူထူးခြားသဖြင့် မွန်သံစဉ်တို့ကို ဖော်ကျူးကာ ကပြရသည့် မွန်ယဉ်ကျေးမှုပဒေသာကပွဲကြီးတို့တွင် အရေးပါလှသည်။ မွန်တို့၏ ကျေးလက်နှစ်ပါးသွားအကတစ်ခုဖြစ်သော “စမိုင်းဂွစ်” သမာဒွက် မွန်စာဆို အကတွင် မိကျောင်းတူရိယာသည် မရှိမဖြစ်ပါရှိရပြီး ဗုံ၊ ပလွေကြီး၊ ထောင်တယော၊ စည်းဝါး တို့နှင့် တွဲစပ်၍ တီးခတ်ရသည်။

  မိကျောင်းတူရိယာကိုယ်ထည်ကို ယမနေ (သို့) ပိတောက် (သို့) တောင်ပိန္နဲသားတို့ဖြင့် ပြုလုပ်ထားသည်။ သံစဉ်များအတွက် ခံတုံး ၁၃ ခု ခံရကာ သက်ဆိုင်ရာ အသံအလိုက် ပိုးကြိုး (သို့) နိုင်လွန်ကြိုး သုံးကြိုး တပ်ဆင်ရပြီး ဖန်တီးထားသော လက်ခတ်ချွန်ဖြင့် ပွတ်တိုက်တီးခတ်ရသည်။

  နှစ်ရှည်သင်တန်းကျောင်းမရှိခြင်း၊ စနစ်ကျသော သင်ရိုးညွှန်းတမ်းမရှိခြင်း၊ ရေရှည်အထောက်အပံ့အားနည်းခြင်းတို့နှင့်အတူ လက်ဆင့်ကမ်းသင်ပေးသူ၊ သင်ယူသူ၊ တီးခတ်တတ်သူ အရေအတွက်တို့သည်လည်း တဖြည်းဖြည်းနည်းပါး လာကာ မိကျောင်းတူရိယာပုံ ဒြပ်ရှိယဉ်ကျေးမှုနှင့် မိကျောင်းတူရိယာတီးခတ်ပညာ ဒြပ်မဲ့ယဉ်ကျေးမှုအမွေအနှစ်ကြီးကား တိမ်ကောသွားဖွယ်ရှိပါသည်။ ခေတ်လူငယ်တို့သည်လည်း ထိုယဉ်ကျေးမှုအမွေအနှစ် တဖန်ပြန်လည်ရှင်သန် သွားရေးတွင် တတ်စွမ်းသည့်အားဖြင့် ပူးပေါင်းပါဝင်ပေးရန် လိုအပ်လျက်ရှိပါသည်။
