Oh-Bo Ward in Sagaing is a region famous for its traditional earthenware pottery. The name "Oh-Bo" comes from the fact that pottery has been made there continuously since the time of the ancient Burmese kings. Drinking water pots from Sagaing are renowned throughout Myanmar for their cooling properties, which are believed to be better than pots from other regions. As a result, they are bought and used by people from all over the country.
The clay pots are made from a natural clay that is a mixture of red and black earth. The potter shapes the clay with their hands to transform it into a pot. Pots made in the month of Pyatho (December-January) are said to be even cooler, which is why "Sagaing Pyatho pots" are particularly famous. In Burmese Buddhist tradition, new pots are used annually on the first day of the new year in Tagu (April) to bathe Buddha statues and to replace old drinking water pots. They are also used as "paritta pots" for blessings and for pouring water onto the Bodhi tree on the full moon day of Kason (May), commemorating the Buddha's enlightenment.
Raw materials for the pots—red earth—are sourced from villages like Wachat and Kyataung near Mingun and Ywathitgyi. However, due to the current political instability in these areas, transportation has become difficult. This has forced the pottery workshops in Sagaing to halt production. Now, potters have to buy and sell pots and other earthenware from Myingyan, Innwa, and Amarapura.
The Sagaing pottery industry in Oh-Bo Ward is facing severe challenges. The widespread use of modern plastic household goods, the scarcity of raw materials, the unstable regional situation, rising costs for materials and transportation, and a shortage of laborers are making it difficult for the industry to survive. To support the growth of the Sagaing earthenware pottery industry, there is a great need for assistance with raw material resources, financial support, and market development.
The process of making a pot involves several steps:
Clay preparation: A mixture of red and black earth is used to prepare the clay.
Shaping: The kneaded clay is rolled into a ball and placed in the center of a potter's wheel, where it is shaped into the desired form using both hands.
Finishing: The shaped pot is passed to a potter who uses tools to adjust its thickness.
Decoration: After about 15 minutes of finishing, the pot is decorated with designs such as diamond patterns or floral motifs.
Drying: Once the finishing is complete, the pots are laid out in the sun or a windy area to dry.
Firing: The dried pots are fired in a kiln. Anywhere from 300 to 500 pots can be fired at once, using traditional materials like wood and straw.

အိုးပုံဖော်ခြင်းအနေဖြင့် ရွှံ့မြေညက်ကိုလုံး၍ အိုးထိန်းစက်၏ အလယ်ဗဟိုတွင် တည်ကာ လက်နှစ်ဖက်ဖြင့် အလိုရှိသော အိုးပုံစံသို့ ရောက်အောင် ပြုပြင်ရသည်။
ပုံသွန်းပြီးသော အိုးကို အိုးခတ်မည့်သူထံ ပို့ရသည်။ အိုးခတ်သူသည် ကိရိယာများအသုံးပြုပြီး အိုး၏အထူအပါးကို ညှိပေးသည်။
အိုးအလှဆင်ရာတွင် အိုးခတ်၍ (၁၅) မိနစ်ခန့်ကြာသော် မှန်ကူကွက်၊ ပန်းခက်ပန်းနွယ် စသည်တို့ဖြင့် ပုံဖော်ပြီးသောအခါ၊ အိုးတစ်လုံးကို အချောကိုင်ပြီးဖြစ်သည်။
အချောကိုင်ပြီးလျှင် နေပူရာတွင်ဖြစ်စေ၊ လေသလပ်ရာတွင်ဖြစ်စေ ဖြန့်ချထားပြီး အခြောက်ခံရသည်။
အချောကိုင်ပြီး သွေ့ခြောက်ပြီးသော အိုးများကို မီးဖုတ်ပေးရသည်။ မီးဖုတ်ရာ၌ အိုးပေါင်း ၃ဝဝ မှ ၅ဝဝ အထိ တစ်ပြိုင်တည်း မီးဖုတ်ပေးကြသည်။ အိုးများကို ရိုးရာအတိုင်း သစ်သားနှင့် ကောက်ရိုးများကိုသုံးပြီး မီးဖုတ်ကြပါသည်။
