Among the prominent churches in Mawlamyine, the Holy Family Cathedral stands out with its red-brick architecture and distinctive rose windows, reflecting a European architectural style. It was built in the 19th century by Bishop Paul Ambroise Bigandet of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP - Missions Étrangères de Paris). [The church's establishment is noted with key dates: 1830, 1859, and 1887, with its designation as Holy Family Cathedral in 1993.]
The entire building is adorned with European Gothic Revival elements, notably the round stained-glass windows, also known as rose windows. The thoughtful placement of these windows not only serves to let in light but also enhances the visual beauty of the space. The side walls, which each feature six rose windows, are also said to be decorated with European-style murals. Other interesting features of the church's European architecture include the use of red brick, a spiral staircase without iron supports, and the worship bells.
In addition to being a place of worship for Roman Catholics, the cathedral is a significant building for Christians, as it hosts various religious festivals, ordinations, Christmas and Easter celebrations, jubilees, and annual Christian gatherings.
Many of Mawlamyine's heritage buildings are deteriorating due to the salty sea air. The Holy Family Cathedral is currently undergoing renovations, supervised by Roman Catholic authorities and supported by the Paris Foreign Missions (MEP).
