Before paper was widely available, the writing slate was an essential writing tool for students. Mudoon village on Bilu Kyun (Bilu Island) was once the only place in Myanmar where these slates were produced. To use them, a flat piece of stone was framed with wood, and then one would write on it with a slate pencil. The writing could be erased and rewritten on the slate over and over again.
U Aung Thein was the first to start making slate boards in 1945. He used iron sheets to scrape stone slabs from a stream flowing down from Mount Motesoema. Since there were no machines at that time, everything was done by hand, and he could only produce about five slates a day.
Here is a brief summary of the slate-making process:
The stone blocks mined from the quarry are brought to the quarry's entrance.
A skilled worker uses a knife to split the stone blocks into slabs.
Another worker then uses a stone-cutting clipper to cut the slabs into appropriate sizes.
The worker uses a carpenter's adze to smooth and thin both sides of the slate.
The slate is then cut into a precise rectangular shape with the stone-cutting clipper.
Workers carry the cut slates to a machine that polishes both sides until they are smooth.
The polished slates are washed, dried, and then painted.
Wooden frames are then attached, and the edges are smoothed with an adze.
Finally, a slate board is ready to be used with a slate pencil.
One of the advantages of using slates is that they allow people to practice handwriting and drawing multiple times, which reduces paper waste. In addition to being used for writing, the stone from the slate mountain can be fashioned into buttons, bracelets, souvenirs, paintings, and signboards.
However, the use of slates is declining. The slate quarries are getting deeper, the slate mountain is being depleted, and paper is now readily and affordably available. As a result, the number of people working in the industry is decreasing. While the entire village of Mudoon on Bilu Kyun once specialized in making slates, only three workshops remain today. As a result, the diminishing supply of slate stone and the disappearing slate-making industry are critically important for the social and economic well-being and the cultural heritage of Mudoon village on Bilu Kyun.
