St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Upper Road, Shwe Taung District, Mawlamyine

When the British took over Mawlamyine, a Barnabite French Missionary Rev. P. Barbe came to Mawlamyine and built the first catholic church in 1829. It was built mainly with the funds and labors provided by the Irishmen in the 45th Regiment of the British army. For almost 30 years St. Patrick’s Church would serve as head quarter of Burma mission up to 1856.
In 1840, the Oblate Bishop Ceretti arrived in Mawlamyine for Burma Mission. He enlarged St. Patrick’s Church built by Rev. P. Barbe with a portico in front. Bishop Bigandet, the French Bishop arrived Malawmyine in 1856 and took over Burma mission from the Oblates.
Rev. X. Ducoty was the one who built the present brick church of St. Patrick. It took two years from 1857-1859 to finish. the corner stone was laid with great solemnity by Mr. F. Narcis, Mr. Ferdinand Ramos contributed for the cost of the steeple.

ဗြိတိသျှတို့ မော်လမြိုင်မြို့ကို သိမ်းယူခဲ့စဉ်က ဘာနတိုက်အသင်းဂိုဏ်းမှ ပြင်သစ်သာသနာပြုဘုန်းတော်ကြီး ပီဘားဘ်သည် မော်လမြိုင်သို ရောက်ရှိလာပြီး ပထမဦးဆုံး ကက်သလစ်ဘုရားကျောင်းတော်ကြီးကို (၁၈၂၉)ခုနှစ်တွင် ဆောက်လုပ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။ ဗြိတိသျှတပ်ရင်း (၄၅)မှ အိုင်ယာလန်လူမျိုးတို့သည် ကုန်ကျငွေနှင့် လုပ်အားကို မတည်ပေးခဲ့ကြသည်။
(၁၈၅၆)ခုနှစ်အထိ စိန်ပက်ထရစ်သာသနာကို မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ သာသနာပြုအဖွဲများ၏ ဗဟိုဌာနချုပ်အဖြစ် နှစ်ပေါင်းသုံးဆယ်နီးပါး အသုံးပြုခဲ့သည်။
